The Arabic Perfume Guide

THE APG KNOW-HOW

Care & Tips

Wear it well. Keep it beautifully.

Practical advice for your perfumes, body sprays and oils. Always follow your own bottle’s directions: application, ingredients and storage instructions vary.

How to wear your fragrance

01 · PERFUMES

Eau de parfum & eau de toilette

  • Apply to clean, dry skin where the product label permits. A small amount on the wrists is a simple starting point.
  • Start lightly and let the fragrance settle before deciding whether you need more. There is no spray count that suits every fragrance or setting.
  • Let the spray dry naturally. You do not need to rub your wrists together.
  • Use less in close shared spaces and respect fragrance-free settings.

02 · SPRAYS & MISTS

Body sprays & deodorant sprays

  • Check whether you have a pump mist or a pressurised aerosol. Shake only when the label says to.
  • Follow the stated spray distance and permitted application areas. For aerosols, use short bursts in a ventilated space and avoid breathing in the spray.
  • Keep sprays away from your face and eyes. Do not use on irritated or broken skin.
  • A fragranced body mist is not automatically a deodorant or antiperspirant. Check what your product actually does.

03 · PERFUME OILS

Roll-ons, attars & dabbers

  • Use an oil labelled for personal fragrance, following its skin-use instructions. Home-fragrance and burner oils are not interchangeable with perfume oils.
  • Start with a tiny dab or a light pass of the roller on a permitted area such as the wrist. Let it settle before adding more.
  • Keep the applicator clean, replace the cap promptly and avoid adding water to the bottle.
  • Keep oil away from clothing unless the manufacturer specifically allows it: oily marks can spoil fabric.

Make a combination your own

Try each fragrance on its own first. When you know both scents, start with two that share a note you enjoy, such as vanilla, rose or musk.

  1. If you use moisturiser, let it absorb before applying fragrance. An unscented one keeps the combination simpler.
  2. Try a small amount of perfume oil, then a light application of spray if both products allow skin use.
  3. Give the combination time to settle. Note what you used and how much, so you can repeat a pairing you like.

Layer on the body as directed, rather than pouring products into one bottle. A blend you enjoy is the goal; layering does not guarantee extra hours of wear.

Give your collection a good home

Cool, shaded & steady

Choose a cupboard or drawer away from sunlight and heat. Avoid windowsills, radiators and hot cars. A bathroom with frequent steam and temperature changes is a less suitable spot.

Closed & upright

Replace caps and tighten oil lids after use. Keep bottles upright and retain the box if it helps shield them from light. Store them where they will not be knocked over.

Extra care with aerosols

Follow the can’s temperature and flammability warnings. Keep it away from heat, flames and ignition sources. Never puncture or burn an aerosol can, even when empty.

A tidy travel routine

Secure the lid and protect glass bottles from knocks. Use a separate pouch for leaks. Check your carrier’s current liquid and aerosol rules before packing.

Keep all fragrances out of reach of children and pets. Follow the expiry date or opened-jar symbol, where provided.

A few things worth knowing

Can I spray perfume on clothes or hair?

Only when the product’s instructions allow it. Perfumes and oils can mark fabrics; take particular care with silk, leather and pale clothing. Choose a product specifically labelled for hair if that is where you want to apply it.

Will perfume oil always last longer than spray?

No universal ranking applies. Formula, amount, skin and conditions affect wear. Compare the exact products rather than assuming an oil, EDP or extrait will always last longer.

Does “alcohol-free” mean it cannot irritate?

No. Follow the label and stop using a product if it causes irritation. An alcohol-free label is not a guarantee that every ingredient suits every person.

What if the fragrance changes?

If it develops an unusual smell, texture or appearance, pause use and ask the brand for advice. A colour change alone is not enough to identify the cause. Avoid trying to repair it by adding water or other products.

How can I keep useful notes on wear time?

Record the exact fragrance and format, how much you applied, when you applied it and whether you reapplied. Separate skin wear from clothing wear. Those details make your APG review more useful to other readers.
